There are 3 major types of plate boundaries that are located around the world.
They are Divergent Boundaries, Convergent Boundaries, and Transform Boundaries.
Watch the video below for a brief explanation of what the types are. Later you will be creating a presentation on the different boundaries located around the world, so pay close attention.

Divergent Boundaries
Divergent boundaries are two types of plates that move away from each other and new crust is formed. This happens when the magma rises to the Earth's surface between two plates. The middle of the Red Sea and the mid-ocean ridge (in the Atlantic Ocean) are two examples of divergent plates.
Convergent Boundaries
A convergent boundary is when two tectonic plates move toward each other. When the two plates are of equal size and density it creates mountain ridges. If they are of different densities one dives under the other in a subduction zone. The Himalayan Mountains and the western coast of South America are examples of convergent boundaries.
Transform Boundaries
A transform plate boundary (or conservative boundary) can be defined as a fault that runs along a tectonic plate. The plates neither create or consume part of the Earth's crust bur rather move against each other building tension. When this tension is released it can create a violent jerk known as an earthquake. Two examples of transform boundaries are the San Andreas Fault in the United States and Alpine Fault in New Zealand.
Plate Tectonics Assignment
In the groups assigned choose one of the following tectonic plates (from the link below) and create a short power point about the plate chosen. The power point must include the name of the tectonic plate, the location, what type of plate (divergent, convergent, or transform) it is, and one interest fact about the plate (date of discovery, major event(s) its caused, etc.).

Give it a Try
These are not required. All activities can be done from home and give a clearer kinesthetic explanation of plate tectonics.
- Build mountains, trigger volcanoes, and build new sea floor. With this fun activity you can change the landscape of the world. Mountain Maker, Earth Shaker.
- Hands-On activity for plate tectonics. Hands-On.
- Hands-On and food, what could be better for learning? Graham Crackers.
